Farm Carbon Calculator (originally CFF Carbon Calculator) is an organisation that exists to promote low carbon practice amongst farmers and growers, which is now a part of Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit.

The start

The catalyst for setting up Climate Friendly Food was NESTA's Big Green Challenge, where we spelled out our vision for a community-led, low cost carbon labelling scheme for farmers and growers measuring carbon impacts from field to kitchen table. The idea was short-listed as one of the final 20 projects in the UK and gained £20,000 worth of funding form NESTA.

Climate Friendly Food was started as an unincorporated association in August 2008 and became a registered Community Interest Company in February 2009. Since November 2010 the Carbon Calculator has existed as a sister project; whilst the carbon calculator project has developed separately from low carbon food certification, but the two are strongly linked

Project development

The carbon calculator was started in June 2009 and finished in September 2009. This, along with the low-carbon food certification scheme, was launched in October 2009 with a week long bike ride from Schumacher College in Dartington to the Schumacher lectures in Bristol, calling in at organic farms along the way. Photos and video from this tour are available on the Video and Images pages.

The calculator was well received and has been used by many organic farmers and growers.

CFF carbon calculator

The carbon calculator is led by Jonathan Smith, organic grower from the Isles of Scilly who runs Scilly Organics and is a co-Director of the Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit with Adam Twine.

Farm Carbon Calculator

Version 3.0 was developed by Jonathan Smith, funded by Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit and released on 1st Feb 2013. The change of name reflects the nature of the organisation, helping farmers and growers cut carbon, firstly by measuring emissions and then by taking steps to cut emissions. We see the Calculator in a strong position now it is a part of FCCT and is one of the leading Calculators for farmers in the UK.
